Can Lactose intolerance be cured?

If your lactose intolerance is a Primary intolerance due to a genetic lactase mutation then the answer is no it can’t be cured. If however it is a transient lactase deficiency due to injury to the villi of the gut whether it be as a result of gut infection, antibiotic use or other, through means of gut repair and regeneration, the lactase production can be resumed resulting in a “cured” lactose intolerance.

How does lactose intolerance affect my health?

The gold standard test for lactose intolerance would be a Hydrogen Breath test. The individual would be required to fast for a number of hours prior to the test being done. They would then breathe into a specific apparatus which would measure their baseline hydrogen output in their expelled breath. They would then be given a high lactose liquid to drink and measurement for hydrogen would be done at intervals and ascertained as to whether or not they are digesting lactose efficiently or not.

How does nutrition play a role in “rest time”?

What an athlete considers as rest time is actually the time in which the body build new structures and support systems as part of the adaptation process. Sure you want your body to do the best work it can, therefore what you give the body (through food), can determine the quality of the work that the body will do for you. The principles therefore would be to eat quality, fresh food with lots of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meat and dairy and keep to a regular schedule of eating. Still concentrate on adequate water intake. Now is sure not the time to give in to binge eating or junk food. A small treat here and there is not a sin, but what they say: Junk in, junk out.

What about supplements? Is it vital or is it a foe?

A supplement is useful if the athlete cannot include certain foods or food groups in their diet for reasons such as allergies, intolerances etc. However, they are not essential. Sports supplements such as shakes, recovery drinks, gels, bars etc. are often more convenient for the athlete when used correctly, however even these are not always necessary.
