Bovine mastitis refers to long-lasting inflammation of a cow’s udder due to either physical trauma or infection by microorganisms. Mammary gland infection can be fatal, and is known to cause the greatest loss to the dairy industry.
The organised dairy industry (Milk SA, MPO and SAMPRO) makes a concerted effort to raise awareness on animal welfare standards. SANS 1694:2018 (The welfare of dairy cattle) is an important step to ensure that producers adhere to minimum criteria of animal welfare and incorporate relevant requirements in their overall responsibility towards the health of the dairy herd.
