Nostalgic comfort food at its nourishing best!
This warming and nostalgic South African dish is sure to keep the chills at bay! Keep in mind that the texture should be lumpy and not smooth. This dish can be served as a dessert or on its own as a light meal.
Nutrition Tip: Full cream milk isn’t just a tasty base for traditional favourites like melkkos — it’s also packed with important nutrients like calcium, protein and vitamin B12.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 Litre Full cream milk
  • 1 Whole cinnamon Stick
  • 50 ml cake flour
  • 1 tbsp fine salt
  • 50 g Butter Cubed
  • cinnamon sugar to serve

Instructions
 

  • Pour the milk into a large pot. Add the cinnamon and heat gradually over a medium-low heat
  • While the milk is heating, combine the flour and salt in a bowl. Add the butter and use your fingertips to rub together until the mixture resembles crumbs. Set aside.
  • Once the milk starts to boil, sprinkle the crumbs into the pot. Use a wooden spoon to stir the milk until the crumbs are evenly distributed. Lower the heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. Allow to simmer for 10 minutes, stirring continuously, until thickened. Cover and allow to simmer for a further 5 minutes, then remove from the heat.
  • Sprinkle some cinnamon sugar into the serving bowls. Dish the melkkos into the bowls and sprinkle more cinnamon sugar on top. Serve immediately.
