Is water added to low-fat or fat-free milk?

No water is added to any milk product. The dairy industry is highly regulated, which means that standards are in place to ensure that the quality of milk and dairy products are adhered to.

The required solid content of milk ranges from 8,6% (in skimmed or fat-free milk) to 8,2% (in high-fat milk), which ensures that no water may be added to milk sold in South Africa. Fat-free milk tends to look watery because the fat (cream) has been removed. The fat in milk gives full-cream milk the natural creamier look and taste.
