How does the dairy industry manage waste water?
Reduce, reuse, and recycle are the pillars of efficient waste water management by South African dairy farmers. Most dairy farms have systems for the disposal of waste water from dairy farming activities into on-site or off-site slurry ponds. The solids from the slurry ponds are used as fertiliser and the water is used for irrigation or recycled for cleaning the milking parlour. A dairy water stewardship working group was established by the Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO) in collaboration with WWF-SA, encouraging innovative initiatives in water management, ecosystem protection, recycling, and effluent treatment in dairy processing facilities. The working group provides a valuable platform for role players in both the primary and secondary dairy industry to share knowledge and experience in a non-competitive environment.
