Many studies have confirmed an association between consumption of dairy products and lowered blood pressure. The beneficial effect of dairy consumption on blood pressure appears to be derived from the unique combination of nutrients in dairy products (referred to as the dairy matrix). The combination of minerals (specifically the ratio of sodium to potassium), vitamins, proteins and essential fatty acids, as well as the specific peptide sequences of dairy, contributes to this effect. Fat-free and low-fat dairy products, especially milk, appear to have an even more pronounced effect on lowering blood pressure than other dairy products.
