Healthy eating is fun!

Have you ever wondered where you get the energy to kick a soccer ball?
What keeps your bones together when you jump rope?
Or, what gives your brain thinking power to do homework?

Like a motorcar needs fuel for it to drive, your body needs food for it to function. But, it doesn’t need just any food, it needs nutritious food from 5 different food groups.

What are food groups?

Food is grouped into five families based on where they come from. E.g. milk, cheese, yoghurt and maas all come from the dairy group. The other food groups are: the vegetables and fruit group, the starch group, the meat and meat alternatives group and the fats and sugars group.

If you eat food from all the food groups, you can proudly say

"I eat a healthy balanced diet!"

What is nutritious food?

Nutritious food is food that contains nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, essential fats, vitamins and minerals. The truth is, you won’t get all these nutrients that your body needs by eating only one type of food – we need to eat from the 5 different food groups.

Nutrients are the teeny-weeny molecules found in food that perform specific functions in our bodies. There are three types of nutrients that our bodies need, want to find out more? Click on nutrients!
