Fats and Sugars

This group of food, is a little different from the other food groups. You only need a little bit of this group and you cannot always see them – they are hidden in food...like the sugar in the cake and biscuits that mom bakes. You can also get fat from foods like butter, margarine and food prepared with oil, like potato chips.

Fats and sugars give your body energy (like the dairy group, starch group, vegetables and fruit). You need energy to walk, run, play and even sleep.

Remember, that the other the five food families has something unique to give to your body, but, for your body to get the nutrients that each food family has to offer, you must eat a certain amount of each type of food, every day.

Your little pinkie represents the fats and sugars family. You only need to eat a little bit of this food family in a day. Click on serving sizes to learn more about how much is actually...a little.

Whether you’ve got work to do, or games to play, always remember - it’s the nutritious food that you eat that powers your body for a fun-filled day!
